Historic Lead, South Dakota

In July, 1876 Lead was founded shortly after the discovery of gold by the Homestake Mining Company and is credited as having one of the largest, deepest, and most productive gold mines in the Western Hemisphere. After the closing of the Homestake Mine in 1998, the population drastically decreased though many locals still reside here. Currently, the old mine territory has been dedicated to enhancing research in the fields of science and engineering. We are proud to have the opportunity to host the famous Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Sanford Lab. This lovely Black Hills town is located in the Western part of the state which is known for its wide range of recreational activities including snowboarding, hiking, fishing, swimming, mountain biking, and much more! Experiencing warm summers and cold, snowy winters in the hills make all of this possible. We appreciate all of the support that helps our community thrive!
